Subcontractor's qualification and capacity:

INSTITUTE OF NORTH INDUSTRIAL ECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS (INEP) was established in 1989, integrated in the organisation of the Kola Science Centre, Russian Academy of Sciences. The aim for establishing the institute was the elaboration of scientific basic information and knowledge with special reference to ecological optimisation of the use of natural resources in the North. For this task the Kola Peninsula has been selected as the most developed mining-metallurgical region of North Russia. The institute has about 88 staff members, including 36 researchers with 5 professors and 16 doctors of sciences.

Experience and knowledge:

One of INEPs basic research directions is assessment and long-term forecasts of probable changes in ecological and natural-economic systems under different scenarios of natural resources use. INEP has also experience related to studies of structural-functional organizations and anthropogenic dynamics in the North ecosystems. A further key issue is the elaboration of scientific foundations for the North ecosystems' sustainability. This is investigated under the extreme natural, climatic conditions and anthropogenic effects initiated by the mining-metallurgical industrial activities. The determination of acceptable loads on terrestrial and water ecosystems by e.g. heavy metals without long term damages to the environment constitutes another important, completing effort of the institute.
