Problems - Objectives

Problem 1: Agriculture
There are distinct differences in farming between the eastern and the western part of the Iron Curtain. In Thuringia the large scale farming 1990is still practiced whereas the farms in former Western Germany are very small scale mostly run by hobby or part-time farmers. The distinctive landscape of the Rhön however needs farming in order to survive. Agriculture therefore guarantees the typical view of the landscape and part of the biodiversity found in the area.

Problem 2: Sealing
The problem of sealing in Thuringia is caused by industrial development and new housing areas around older settlements.

Problem 3: Waste Water Management
On the Thuringian site the Waste Water Management is yet unsatisfying. Special sewage treatment plants are missing, but they would be necessary to solve the problem in the long term.

Problem 4: Tourism
Tourism can be a chance to produce income in the area by accomodation but also by selling local goods and produce.

Problem 5: Depopulation
Due to low income the Rhön area has always been a source of emigration to better-off areas. Today the area is facing depopulation because of its relative remoteness and lack of job opportunities.

Main objectives
Main objective of the work will be along the problem complex of agricultural landuse and related visual landscape properties and biodiversity. Agriculture will be analysed for its share of local income in conjunction with EU financial support and for its relation to landscape and biodiversity. The effect of different landuse options on income, landscape and biodiversity on the regional scale will be modelled and analysed. Thus an expert system will be created to support decision making in this field.
