Problems - objectives
Main problems:
- Poor infrastructure: road network maintance, lack of facilities
to enhance tourism in the area
- Water quality problems: intencive use of pestisides and fertilisers,
no waste water treatment facilities, unsystematic cattle breeding,
salinization of coastal areas
- Water quantity problems: intencive use of water for urban
use and irrigation, construction of dams for energy production
- Environmental protection
- Lack of data: inadequate network for monitoring
- Lack of cooperation and coordination: many authorities are
responsible for different aspects of water resources management
Main objectives:
- Comply with the Ramsar treaty and EU quidelines for environmental
protection
- Establish common monitoring system to control pollution
in the Boulgarian territory.
- Coordination of authorities
- Ameliorate the current infrastructure
- Reorient existing agriculture towards sustainable agriculture
- Create opportunities for the development tourism in the
reference area
Main expected results:
The development of a methodology and a set of
standardized tools for the integrated resource evaluation, analysis
and management of river Nestos as well as the enhancement of a fuitfull
transboundary cooperation.
